A marching dead band?! Catch the Parade on Saturday!

Most festivals tend to have two things in common – Music & Food – and these are two things to be found in abundance at the 69th Annual Sister Bay Fall Fest, Oct. 27-19, 2014. Throughout the weekend you’ll find Food & Drink vendors at various locations throughout the village (10-5 Fri./Sat. and 10-4 Sun.), and lots more to tempt the taste buds and please the palate at local restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops!

There are two special meals this weekend that you won’t want to miss: Friday from 5-8 pm, experience a Door County tradition – a real Fish Boil at the Fire Station on Mill Road, sponsored by Sister Bay Lions Club. On Saturday, from 7-11am, enjoy a fabulous Pancake Breakfast at the Village Hall Saturday, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Northern Door.

Karen and Carl Berndt, owners of Harbor Fish Market & Grille and Custards Last Stan in Baileys Harbor went live Thursday when they flipped the ‘ON’ switch on their new solar water heating system.

The project, which took ten months to complete, included two very important people in the process: Ben Anschutz of Anschutz Plumbing in Baileys Harbor and Patrick Strantz, a building contractor, full time maintenance manager at the YMCA in Fish Creek and long time maintenance manager for the Berndts.

Together they have created a custom solar water heating system that not only addresses the water heating needs of the two restaurants but will also provide the hot water for the employee housing and the Berndt’s living quarters.

Live Music at Cupcake Heaven in Sister Bay with Marybeth Mattson

Marybeth Mattson

Marybeth Mattson

SISTER BAY, WI (June 2014) – Cupcake Heaven in Sister Bay invites you to stop in and enjoy live music each week this summer with local singer/songwriter Marybeth Mattson, performing in the shop from 2-4pm every Sunday in August.

Mattson began her performance and songwriting career after the 2008 season of America’s Got Talent, in which Door County piano man Eli Mattson took second place. As any good big brother, Eli encouraged Marybeth to follow her dreams and, along with fellow performer Seth Raddatz, offered constructive criticism which ultimately helped shape her musical and lyrical choices, and gave her the courage and drive to record her first album Relative Hunger, released in 2012.

The Taste and Tunes of Door County, WI June 12-15, 2014: Steel Bridge Songfest, DC Beer Fest, and Sip & Savor w/ Paddlefest

Get a taste and a tune in Door County this weekend! June 12-15, 2014 is Steel Bridge Songfest in Sturgeon Bay. This Saturday, June 14th is Sip & Savor with Paddlefest in Sister Bay, as well as Door County Beer Fest and the Ride For Nature in Baileys Harbor, and July 15th is Father’s Day – so bring Dad for all the festivities and toast to his health! Sample local beers, wines, and hard ciders, and treat the taste buds to dishes from a variety of local food vendors while you treat the ear buds to lots of live music. Skip the paisley tie this year and give Dad a six pack or two of a new brew or a few bottles of his favorite wine, and don’t forget that most of the musicians performing throughout the county this weekend sell CDs of their original music – which make great Father’s Day gifts too!

Steel Bridge Songfest in Sturgeon Bay runs Thursday, June 12 through Sunday, June 15, 2014. This is an astonishing festival in that all the musicians who perform volunteer their time, and those who participate in the “Construction Zone” (there are some 70 this year) spend the entire week prior to the festival spinning a whiskey bottle to form groups in which they co-write dozens upon dozens of original songs which they record at the Holiday Music Motel, then perform for audiences at a variety of indoor and outdoor venues.

Door County Chefs Welcomes New ‘Ask a Chef’ Contributor: Rachel Lohman, The Cookie Lady of Drink Coffee

Rachel Lohman, rolling out Croissants

On one of the coldest days in January, I caught up with Rachel Lohman, owner and chief bottle washer of Drink Coffee, located in Sister Bay. This time of year Drink Coffee is closed, but that doesn’t mean Rachel isn’t in the Drink frame of mind. She’s busy reading cookbooks, researching sandwiches and bakery goodies for the 2014 busy season. To welcome her as both a chef and a baker to Door County Chefs ‘Ask a Chef’ features, I wanted to ask her a few questions about Drink Coffee and the Cookie Lady herself…
