On Wednesday, June 29 from 5 – 8 pm you are invited to wine, dance and dine with the Renaissance Fantasy Faire’s full Royal Court and its entertainers at The English Inn in Fish Creek.

The 2nd Annual Royal Feast Buffet dining extravaganza will take place featuring not only the King and Queen in full regalia, but the entire Royal Court and a crescendo performance by the Kaheena Belly Dancers. The chefs will provide a festive array of chicken and ribs with a variety of other specialties and desserts in an unlimited buffet.

Cast members from the Door County Renaissance Fantasy Faire will be strolling about and dining in fabulous costumes, willing to strike a pose with guests for photographs. Queen Catherine and King Edward are members of “Have Court, Will Travel!” a professional troupe of more than a dozen re-enactors that portray a fictitious court in the historical time period of the 1550s. They are in Door County to celebrate the 2nd annual Door County Renaissance Fantasy Faire that takes place in the magical woodlands of Carlsville on the weekends preceding and following the Royal Buffet.

Dining is from 5 – 8 pm, and will be capped off at 8 pm with a performance by Sarisha and Jessika, members of the Kaheena Belly Dance Troupe. They arrived at the festival in a gypsy wagon filled with dancers, who are also performing over both weekends in Carlsville.

Jesika

There may also be several Knights, members of Noble Cause Productions, a company performing at the Faire that specializes in jousting, stage combat instruction, fight choreography, and horse stunts.

The dining experience is intended to provide a taste of the color and pageantry of the renaissance time period. Each court member is a fully fleshed out character who can interact and improvise with patrons of all ages. Knighting and Lady selection ceremonies, merchant visits, and royal audiences are all a part of the Door County Renaissance Fantasy Faire experience. Two weekends of historical adventure, entertainment, fun and festivities with a Royal Court Dinner in between make this year’s festival a highlight for families and individuals who love the days of olde.

Tickets for the dinner and entertainment are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Children 10 and under are $15 in advance and $17.50 at the door. Please RSVP to dcrff@att.net or call 920.973.8233 for more information or to make reservations.

The Door County Buy Local Agriculture sub-committee is holding a Local Food Mixer event on Wednesday, April 27, from 4:30-6:30 pm at the Draft Haus (formerly The Reef) at 901 Egg Harbor Road in Sturgeon Bay.

The purpose of the event is to help connect producers, consumers, retailers and restaurateurs interested in locally produced agricultural products. A short program will feature comments from a local grower, a local restaurateur and a local retailer on the advantages and obstacles to selling and using local foods, designed to stimulate discussion of the issues facing local producers and consumers. Following the program, the attendees will have opportunities to network and exchange information about their local businesses.

The Buy Local Initiative will begin by encouraging networking opportunities between local businesses. A second priority will be educating the public about the economic value of keeping as many dollars as possible in Door County along with efforts to share information about what services and products are available through Door County enterprises. A third focus will be to encourage non-profit, civic organizations and governmental bodies to do as much business as practical with Door County firms.
Representatives of local agriculture producers, chefs, restaurateurs, institutional users, consumers and supporters of sustainable, local agriculture are invited to attend. Attendees are asked to bring business cards and information about their farms and businesses. A set of tables will be used to display this promotional literature and information about Door County Buy Local and its members.

Refreshments and appetizers will be served, along with a cash bar. A $5 donation is requested to defray costs. For more information, to join Door County Buy Local or view an upcoming event schedule for the rest of the year, go to: www.doorcountybuylocal.com.

The Door County Buy Local program is a grass-roots economic development initiative that seeks to strengthen local businesses, increase employment opportunities and educate the public about the importance of buying locally whenever possible.

The Door County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) is a public/private partnership dedicated to improving the economic vitality of the county and its residents. Founded in 1989, DCEDC has been successful in helping existing businesses create and retain thousands of jobs through a myriad of programs and initiatives. Additionally, DCEDC places strong emphasis on fostering entrepreneurial instincts in county residents as well as those who vacation on the Door County Peninsula. Door County Economic Development Corporation offices are located within the small business incubator DCEDC founded in 1997 at 185 East Walnut Street in the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park.

Delicious cherry pies from Door County’s own Sweetie Pies in Fish Creek are only a part of the bet between Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn over the Packers vs Bears NFC Championship game this weekend!

When Jon Jarosh, the Communications & PR Director from the Door County Visitor Bureau noticed that Governor Scott Walker was Tweeting @GovWalker for possible ideas on a wager he might use to challenge the Governor of Illinois over this weekend’s Packer vs Bear game, Jon immediately thought of Door County cherries!

Nothing beats the taste of a fresh-baked Door County Cherry Sweetie Pie!

“I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to offer up some of our delicious Door County cherry pies as part of the Wisconsin side of the wager,” Jarosh said Wednesday. “So I tweeted back and said we’d be happy to put up some Door County cherry pies. The next day we got a call from the Governor’s office asking to take us up on our offer.”

According to a press release issued by the governor’s office, the loser of the bet will volunteer in a food pantry in the winner’s state wearing a t-shirt of the opposing team while distributing the food from the wager. Wisconsin cranberry products, bratwurst, custard and honey will join Door County cherry pies in the friendly wager by Governor Walker. In addition, the loser must also fly the opposing team’s flag in his governor’s office for a day before the Super Bowl.

“I received many tweets offering some of Wisconsin’s most famous foods as a wager,” Governor Walker said in a statement released Wednesday. “I’m grateful that win or lose, those food producers have committed to donating food to the pantry at which the losing Governor volunteers. I look forward to hosting Governor Quinn in Wisconsin after a 28-24 Packer victory,” he said.

Jarosh said ten Door County cherry pies from Sweetie Pies in Fish Creek will be sent to a yet-to-be-determined location selected by the governor’s office following the game, and that hopefully it will be in Wisconsin. He was excited for Door County and the Visitor Bureau to be a part of the wager between Governors, and looked forward to the county’s popular red fruit helping carry the green and gold to victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

A Chicago couple plans to open a seasonal Tapas Restaurant here in Door County, but they have started their search for a chef there.

With so many talented local people here in Door County who know the ins and outs of running a business, we believe they would benefit in numerous ways if they found a local resident chef to head their operations. And we feel that spending locally in Door County also means hiring locally…

“We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and industrious Chef seeking summer employment for 2011 and hopefully summers beyond. This 50 seat restaurant and bar will serve traditional Spanish small plates as well as some locally inspired fare. Our goal is to be the most unique and happening place in all of Door County,” says their January 7, 2011 listing.

“The ideal candidate would be someone who can lead a lean operation by example. The ideal Chef would also have the drive to set the bar high in an up-and-coming dining scene. He or she would also be someone who values his or her freedom in the off-season to pursue other gigs or travel. We are hoping this could be the beginning of a long a beautiful arrangement.”

See the craigslist job listing and reply via that email address.

The Chicago couple encourages you to be spontaneous: “You can skip the stuffy cover letter and let your personality show in the email.”

Chili cook-offs at both Door County YMCA Program Centers and upcoming Family Dance raise funds for the 2010 Door County YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

Visitors to the YMCA enjoyed sampling all the soups at the YMCA or taking a container of their choice to enjoy at home. A select group of judges at each YMCA Center location sampled all the entries and chose the winning recipes.

Brenda Abrahamson took the honors of Grand Champion in Sturgeon Bay with her Chili. Amy Stephens captured a first for her Wild Rice Mushroom Turkey, Carly Sarkis second with her Chicken Dumpling and Cindy Livingston third with Brett Favre Chili. People’s choice award in Sturgeon Bay went to Steve Wisniewski at Door County Memorial Hospital for his Lobster Bisque.

Northern Door Staff await hungry Soupers... photo by Brynn Swanson

Northern Door YMCA’s first place winner was Janice Thomas from the Savory Spoon with a French Lentil with Root Vegetables, second place went to Todd Bennett from the Chefs Hat for his Black Bean Andouille Sausage with Wild Rice and third place was Audrey Grasse with a Roasted Squash with Apple Soup.

Special thanks to the dozens of soup chefs and servers who helped make the Souper Stars Challenge possible. All proceeds from the chili cook-offs will go towards the 2010 Door County YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

The Strong Kids Campaign is the annual campaign to provide funds for scholarships and affordable programs “for all” in Door County regardless of age or financial need. In 2009, the community helped the Door County YMCA raise $400,450 to support this program. The goal for the 2010 campaign is $410,000.
