GLAS, the green coffeehouse, opened its doors for business on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009. The 1,077 sq. ft. coffeehouse is located at 67 East Maple St. at the foot of the new bridge and is in a shared building with Cellcom. Grand opening festivities are slated for early spring.
“We hope the coffeehouse becomes a gathering place for the Sturgeon Bay community and its visitors,” says GLAS Manager Meghan Riordan. “We offer a great environment with occasional live entertainment. The unique interior design captures a relaxing and welcoming feel with a beautiful view. And we do our part to be earth-friendly, our design reflects that.”
GLAS is the Gaelic word for green. The name of the coffeehouse symbolizes the color, the Irish culture and an effort to become earth-friendly. Reducing the need for new trees to be harvested, tables in the coffeehouse are made from reclaimed wood from lab desks at Lawrence University in Appleton. Other furniture in the coffeehouse, such as the comfy chairs, are second-hand and have been reupholstered. All to-go, disposable items will be 100 percent compostable.
GLAS offers indoor seating for up to 30 customers at tables and various comfy spots and has seating for up to 20 customers outdoors on the patio. Free Wi-Fi Internet is available to customers inside and outside. Electrical outlets are accessible from all seating areas. GLAS also has a computer with Internet access available for free to customers. All Internet service is powered by Cellcom’s wireless broadband Internet.
The menu will include high quality coffees, a variety of loose leaf teas, specialty coffee drinks, bakery items, breakfast items and sandwiches. The coffeehouse will be open seven days a week: Monday – Friday from 6:30 am -8 pm, Saturdays from 7:30 am – 5 pm and Sundays from 11am – 5 pm.
GLAS, the green coffeehouse, is a new venture for Cellcom, a wireless company based in Green Bay.
