Baileys Harbor is warming up this Door County winter with their very first Winter Carnival on February 7-9, 2014, with bonfires, live music, shopping, and winter games!
Carnival season traditionally begins on January 6th after Twelve Night and runs through Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, which ends at midnight before Ash Wednesday. Called Carnivale in Latin countries, this is a season of merriment, dancing, and feasting preceding the Catholic fasting season of Lent—hence the translation of “Carne — Vale!” to “Meat — farewell!”
One unique feature of this cool Carnival is that it wraps up with a Winter Farmers’ Market at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall. Two Winter Farmers’ Markets have already come and gone, and previous vendors have included Pat’s Patch (organic produce), Design Door County (fresh and silk floral arrangements), Door County Kraut, and many other local artisans, offering items like handmade oven mitts, jewelry, folk art, cards, Door County Sauces, and hats and scarves. Shopping can work up an appetite, and whether or not you will be giving up meat (or anything else) for for Lent, you’ll be looking for delicious meals to fuel your Winter Carnival activities. Find what you’re hungry for: Download the free Door County Chefs APP to search and find menus, directions, and click-to-call phone numbers for Door County restaurants!
Though the toasty temperatures you’d experience at the world famous Rio de Janeiro Carnaval are unlikely in Baileys Harbor this February, this Winter Carnival offers Door County residents and visitors a great way to beat cabin fever! Book your stay now: in town at Nelson Lakeview Suites & Motel, or just south of Baileys Harbor at Scofield North, or at Maxwelton Braes Lodge to be where the band is playing! Check out the blogs at DoorCountyLodging.com for great winter specials and rates at lodgings throughout Door County.
